Short Story – When we met

It had been a long time since I kept wandering. As I had walked along the path, I met many faces bringing smile to their lips, by helping them fetch some money in the trade of business.

My parents had molded my liquid state into solid, making me fit to face this world. But they had quickly disappeared handing me away to some stranger, against my wish. I never found them back again in life.

I was keen to discover the purpose of my placement on this earth by my maker. Moreover, I had grown tired of seeing the changing faces and instead wanted one permanent home to settle in. For few days, I found myself lying idle in one dirty corner of a room until few others joined my company but by the time our friendship bond could strengthen, they moved on bidding me goodbye to find their new destination.

Happiness knew no bounds when one fine day, I finally found a new home which appeared to be a permanent one. A young boy from a family had taken me along. The family was happy inviting me in, as I could see the satisfaction on the face of the lady of the home. She had greeted me with a smile and placed me in a new room, which was very neat and clean as compared to the environment I was used to.

As days passed by at their home, I spent my time with grace listening to the sweet sound of the inmates and it was so nice to reside amidst them. I observed the utmost dedication of the mistress tiring herself day long to ensure her kids grew in a clean atmosphere and they got to eat what they desired for. I had started liking the mistress for the selfless act towards her family.

While all this made the mind happy, the loneliness on the other hand was eating me up. Neither she nor the children ever noticed me and this saddened the heart.

One evening, I figured that the lady of the house placed a hunt for me and finally finding me, she took me along with her into the hall. Darkness was quickly invading the fading natural light of the evening that had crept into the room and as they spoke it dawned on me that there was a power cut in the area and the darkness would stay there for long.

‘Children just be where you are, I have brought him, give me a few minutes’ yelled out the mother to her children who were running around in the room.

The mother left me in the hall at the table and quickly went into the kitchen and returned back with someone shining bright, whom I saw for the first time in life.

As I looked at her closely, I discovered her to be extremely beautiful. She looked so dazzling and lucent that I my gaze got fixed. She shone in her yellow dress beaming blue and fluttering shyly peeping every corner and it felt I was falling head over heels for her and the sudden strong feeling engulfed me over completely.

The lady of the house was far more pleasing than her but yet the heart seems to follow the yellow one instead.

‘Everyone is beautiful. They just need the right eyes to fall on’ the heart consoled itself.

As the one way love story was taking its shape, the children continued with their work – the boy busy playing his car and the girl peeling onions humming a rhyme and the mistress was busy preparing the dinner for the night.

While all this happened, the yellow lady stood at a near distance right above my head. She continued to flutter with her bright beauty. Noticing that she was being watched she slowly turned her gaze to look down at me with her pride filled eyes glancing through my tall height and the clean white cladded dress but very soon turned away back to her world, disinterested.

‘What did this gesture mean?, Am I good-for-nothing…….’, hundreds of questions started pricking my mind.

Life seemed to have found its meaning and I wanted to quickly start a conversation with her to discuss the past, the present, our future and share the thought of how beautiful the life could turn out with each other in it.

As I tried pushing myself closer to her, she burned with anger with her red bulging eyes. The more and more I tried reaching near to her, the more and more she melted me with her fierce form pushing my strength to the ground.

How mean she was turning out to be? Is the other name of beauty called Pride? Maybe ‘Humble’ could not share a place alongside beauty. But I decided not to loose hope.

As my struggle continued, an hour flew by and we both were, where we were. There was no slightest change in the relationship but the distance between us draw itself farer and farer. I kept on gazing at her and she continued burning my form minute by minute.

I finally realized that I was loosing my ground and the fact that the one whom I loved was the one who was pushing me down further made me weak in the feet. The thought of her hatred further pulled my tears out.

As I was lost in thoughts, I saw the mistress entering the hall, this time with another lookalike of me and placed him somewhere close to me.

I could see one more story shaping at a distance as the yellow and blue darling danced on his head and I noticed that a new heart set itself to melt for her.

‘Maybe that’s fate. I found her in the darkness and dreamt of the light she would bring along but the same bright face became the reason of my end.

I closed my eyes for the one last time as the remaining part of my form melted down killing me and pushing out my last tears on earth.

  9. A very sad ending to the tale. Although this is a figment of your imagery, I hope no child goes through life with this kind of confusion or misery, Ravi. A lot of emotions in that beautiful tale, but the child’s feelings are so beautiful, and the wisdom the lines “Everyone is beautiful. They just need the right eyes to fall on” will be one that will remain in my memory always.
